One of the things I really wanted to do, for a long time, but especially on this trip was to see Everest. At first we had talked about trekking in from the Nepal side since Tibet seemed to be off the table with all the fuss around the Olympics. However, when our trip to Kailash came together, we made sure to schedule in a day to make the trip up to base camp on the Tibet side. While getting to the Nepal-side base camp involves a minimum 10-day trek, the Chinese have made a road to the north-face base camp. Not quite as satisfying maybe, but the view really makes up for it. From Nepal, you can really only see the top of Everest, peeking over Nuptse and Lhotse in front of it. On the Tibet side, you see the whole north face rising in front of you.
We got to spend most of the day walking around and relaxing in highly unseasonable weather. It was warm, sunny and almost no wind. Pretty amazing considering it's about 18,000ft and November.
Sorry it took so long to get the photos up (almost a month!), but we think you'll still enjoy them.
